Epic Iceland 2015, Day 1 – Wednesday, July 22nd

I’m trying to be better this time around and writing (pen and paper) up things as I go, resulting in a sort of delayed live blog of sorts. We’ll see how that goes.

Cab arrived a touch after 7 am. Heavy-set, late-middle-aged white man. Fairly friendly; very chatty. Today not as good as “yesteryear”; he was all about yesteryear. Drives his wife nuts buying old furniture and appliances–old claw foot tub in their bedroom, wants 1950s fridge for spare room to go with hotplate so he can get a drink/coffee in the middle of the night without going downstairs at night. Absolutely loved me for paying cash. “I love you. Absolutely love you.”

***

Arrived at gate after no trouble checking in my baggage and getting through security. Two-plus hours early. As usual. Got approached by the gate attendant asking if I’d checked a bag. Since I had, I missed out on a chance to get on an earlier flight to Boston. Wonder if it would have been first class. Hm.

***

For action figures this time I packed Black Widow…and Loki. Can’t leave Loki behind. Brought me good travel karma on my last few trips, and it wouldn’t be the same without him. Also packed Bearrie in my checked luggage. I damned well better not lose my luggage. Have slept with that bear since I was ten. This is the first trip I’ve ever taken him on. Lord.

***

Flight delayed twice. Still okay on time. Getting offered a seat on that early flight must have been a sign. Last time I was okay getting out of Philly but majorly delayed in Boston. I can handle the reverse. The less time in Boston, the better. 🙂

***

Guy next to me in waiting lounge, Canadian born, trying to set up appointment with investment person to get money from recent sale of something out of his long-time Canadian bank account. Kept mentioning “my wife” every few words.

Mother and young daughter (four-ish). Kid doesn’t sit still and thinks doll with one leg (fell off) now not pretty; mother trying to convince her otherwise.

***

Bigger plane. May have row to myself. Also have window seat. Lady has her cat with her. At least no I know it’s not just Skye that sounds sad in her carrier. I am way too amused by this.

***

Upside to delay in Philly was minimal time in Boston. Very quiet this time of day, but still a poorly marked walk between terminals. Picked up a small external charger for my phone. Sales guy almost let me go without paying. Darn my integrity.

***

Forgot about the “free” Icelandic water. Must remember ot keep the bottle this time [I didn’t]. Sitting in 13D. Lucky 13 [no, really, it’s my lucky number, born on Friday the 13th and all that]. Leg room is typical, meaning none but *shrug*. I’m on my way to Iceland. I can deal with the rest. Especially since I have an aisle seat. I like window, but aisle is better on long trips [save for the occasional bumping as people go past]. No cat this flight and all seats are full. Got spoiled with leg room and a row to myself on the last flight.

Got a bit of a headache. Am hoping it’s due to little food. I did have a protein bar before boarding and the water will help.

***

Points to Icelandair for their safety vid. Voiceover and instructions laid over people out enjoying the wilderness. Good juxtaposition of real imagery with instruction.

***

Had a food and beer (and Pringles). For about $22 it is what it is–overpriced airline food. But I was so damn hungry the green curry chicken tasted amazing and the Gull lager refreshing…headache is gone, I feel good, what else matters.

***

I am hot for the first time all day and now have the fan on me. Very unusual. Seriously, I’m sitting in my tank top, still hot. Never happens.

In other complains, I think my right forearm has ringworm and my glasses lenses are scratched to hell–stupid coating always does that [and at the least convenient time]. However, my right lower eyelid has finally stopped twitching after four days. I’m thinking that, yes, it was stress and not allergies. Mixed bag, but I’ll take the scratched lens and potential ringworm in place of a twitchy eye. Oh, yes.

***

Eye twitch seems to come and go. After hours of nothing, it started up again; then stopped [then came and went, and is currently not happening]. If I don’t think about it, apparently it won’t do it.

Got two more repeats of my scarf done and watched pieces of Catching FireThe Incredibles, and Bridge to Tarabithia on seats around the plane [tried a few things on mine, but nothing caught my attention]. Also Science of Stupid with Richard Hammond.

***

Still pretty light out for landing at near midnight local time. Didn’t think it was still so light this time of year [to be fair, I visited in September last time with normal day lengths and it is still July].

***

Baggage arrived and was fairly early off the plane. Despite being under construction, [the terminal] much better marked that Boston Logan [not much isn’t better than Boston Logan]. Still fairly light out and not too cold–maybe around 50F. Found Flybus (hotel transport). Waiting for it to load up and listening to a mix of languages. Fair bit [OMG, must stop using “bit”] of Americans but Icelandic and more. Love listening to Icelandic (or any non-English language) and hearing English words dropped in, like “Facebook”.

***

Arrived at Reykjavik Natura around 1:45 am. Got checked in by cute (male) redhead with spikey hair. Was impressed when I said “takk” (thanks). Go me. Called Mom. Tweeted. IM’d Steph via Skype. Following momentary panic where I thought I forgot my floss, my teeth are clean and I’m ready for bed.

Tomorrow / today is sleep, food, transcribe, then explore.

Bit (agh!) stream of consciousness there, but it’s something to start with. We’ll see how this blogging evolves while I’m here.

Forgot about the girl on the plane watching What to Expect When You’re Expecting and Friends, journaling (maybe?), and eating cold chicken nuggets from Burger King off and on the whole flight. IDEK. The cold nugget thing bugs me.

Oh, look, still doing stream of consciousness. Heh. Well, whatever. It’s a record. Do with it what you will. Now to figure out what I’m going to do today, besides curl up in a patch of sun and sleep like a cat.

Spellcheck isn’t flagging anything, so I dropped the text into Word (my transcription skills are a bit lazy). Kind of glad I did. Not too bad, but a few weird things like “Veyr” instead of “very”. Now I’m done.
