Epic Iceland 2015, Day 10 – Friday, July 31

Day 10 pics here.

There are a lot of people in the lobby. Really hoping it’s multiple groups. Gotta be.

Clothes were all dry, so yay.

After breakfast I read some more Human Remains. Oh, Mystrade. 🙂

I think today’s itinerary is essentially the Golden Circle–Thingvellir, Geysir, and Gullfoss. Hvolsvollur is tonight’s stay. Maybe their wifi is working?

***

Bus this time. Smallish bus, but way more than five people. Maybe between a dozen and twenty. More what I expected [with the first trip]. Still a bit of an adjustment. I’ll be good though. Really. First day is always the toughest.

***

Dutch sounds a bit like German. I’ll be interesting to see if I pick anything up. I think I’m starting to hear Icelandic in my head. Just noise, but nice noise.

***

I think I counted sixteen in the group, including the guide. We’ve got Holland represented, Belgium, the US, Taiwan, Australia, Israel, and the UK. Good mix. 🙂

***

Sunny but windy and cool. Thingvellir still is breathtaking. Saw the Drowning Pool this time.

Coffee and rest stop at nearby info booth/cafe. Got an Icelandic Pancake (lots of sugar) as well.

***

About 135 ISK to $1.00, better than I thought.

***

Stopped at a nursery near Reykholt to pick up trees to plant. And buy fruit. Definitely pricey, but the raspberries are massive and fresh and fruit. Debating on a name for my tree. Not very original, but I think I’ll go with Loki-tree.

Next up Geysir for food and, well, geysers. 🙂

***

OMG, the Brits and Aussies are discussing cricket scores. Too awesome. And potentially trouble? 🙂

***

Strokkur, the active geyser at Geysir (Geysir is no longer active itself), was boiling water shooting in the sky. It’s amazing, but I can’t help a touch of amusement that we’re all standing there waiting for water to boil and explode. Bit windy, but sunny. Got a few decent shots. But not as good as last time.

***

Tree planted. Think I did alright. Grow strong, Loki-tree.

***

Got a couple of good rainbow shots at Gullfoss and only a little bit wet.

***

Still got a touch of a sore throat. Seems more at the top. Stupid body. In two weeks you can get sick as much as you want.

***

Quick stop at “Foxy Falls” [maybe Faxaufoss?]. Has set of stairs to the side for salmon to swim up.

***

Today’s accommodation: Hotel Hvolsvollur. Best feature? Motherfucking wifi! *happy dance*

***

Dinner, for a buffet, was better than expected. A good variety. Tried the marinated lamb. Very tasty. I’m ignoring the fact it’s essentially lamb sushi. Also had the hotel house beer. Faint spice and orange, kind of amber ale-y.

***

Now I’m taking advantage of the wifi to upload my photos and get the blog current. Then I’m going to crash early. See if I can sleep off the creeping crud. Not getting sick. I’m NOT. So. There.
