Epic Iceland 2015, Day 11 – Saturday, August 1st

Day 11 pics here.

The sleep and Claritin seemed to help somewhat. Throat is only slightly scratchy, but I’ve got that general, ugh, not 100% feeling. Although, at eleven days in with okayish sleep and all the travel entails… To be fair, I think I always wind up a bit under the weather a couple days after I go on trips. And since I’m still here traveling, makes sense.

Enough sick vs. not sick.

Nothing much to report. Just killing time until we head out. Looks like two waterfalls on the docket–Slejanlandsfoss and Skogafoss (both of which I saw the last go ’round). But this time, since I have hit peak waterfall yet, I’m going to walk all the way behind Seljalandsfoss. Black sand beach and Vik are also in the queue. I think by the end of today I’ll be getting to the new stuff. And I took this tour knowing I’d be revisiting some places because there are places (Asbyrgi) that I need to see again.

I almost texted a work colleague this morning to see how things were. Then I remembered a) it’s still super early there, and b) it’s the weekend. Work’s work. It’ll be there or it won’t when I get back.

Knew I should’ve grabbed my towel this morning. Seljalandsfoss isn’t bad once you get past the side. And I don’t think my green coat repels as well as the pink one did. Glad I didn’t wear my sweater, which is made for cold, damp weather but blegh. Think I got some good shots that weren’t too water spotted. My transition lenses are really weird at the moment as the water spots made them a bit speckled with the change. Oh, water, the crazy shit you do.

I am also currently drinking water from the stream beneath the falls. Not too shabby. Cold, clean water.

Visited the Eyjafjalljokull Visitor Center. The resiliency of people impresses me, even the second time around.

***

Picture stop at Solheimajokull, glacier outlet for Myrdalsjokull.

The weather is much more variable today. No rain yet, but it looks like to could. Mostly sunny to the south and southwest. Mostly cloudy everywhere else.

***

Okay, Dyrholaey (Door Hole Island) was pretty cool. Not as loud as Latrrabjarg, but a couple good puffin shots. Not to mention and amazing view.

***

The stop at Vik for lunch was a mixed bag. Way overcrowded and poorly queued. I felt like I was always in someone’s way. The soup of the day was okay (tomato veggie), and I got to chat with some fellow travelers. I think my mistake was going to the souvenir shop. That’s where I really seemed to be in everyone’s way. So I went outside and knit a bit until the bus opened up.

***

Reynishveri black sand beach. Picked up way too many stones. Not too cold or windy. Sun out. Had skyr cake at the cafe. Not as good as Hamborgarafabrikan’s but tasty.

***

Impromptu stop back in Vik where we hiked around a bit while the driver checked out the engine. All is well, but this is two for two now (yesterday’s had issues, too; different bus and driver). Stepped into the information center. While I doubt it, I need to look into whether or not Katla’s October 1918 eruption had any impact on World War I or the Spanish Flu Epidemic.

***

Picture stop at the Laki lava fields, the eruption which may have influenced late 18th century European events (e.g., poor harvest leading to shortages leading to The French Revolution).

***

Hotel Laki for next two nights. Basic but good. And wifi!

***

And yeah, I’m sick. Ugh. Gimme all the drugs. I’ve got new things to see!

***

Buffet was meh. But food is food. Now to wrap up and go to bed.
