Epic Iceland 2015, Day 14 – Tuesday, August 4th

Day 14 pics here.

Slept alright, even if the pillow was a bit flat. Crazy dreams again. This time revolving around a live taping of The Big Bang Theory, and Topher Grace was there in place of Johnny Galecki. IDEK

Cough is greater than the congestion now, so I do believe I’m finally on the upswing. Better be. I’ve only got one Claritin left.

Overcast, cool, and quite windy today. I pulled out the sweater because, dammit, I’m wearing it at least once while I’m here.

Google says some of the Apollo astronauts did come to Iceland to study geology collection techniques. Makes sense. And now I remember where I heard about it. When I was looking up the Phallological Museum, the former location in Husavik is now dedicated to human exploration with an exhibit on Apollo.

***

It’s QUITE windy. Boy, howdy. Put my fleece on under the sweater. Should be fairly toast but windblown. The wind here doesn’t fool around. Up to 18 m/s today.

***

Taking F26 Sprengisandur through the rest of the Highlands.

***

No clouds in a Martian sky

No grass struggling to take hold

Rocks, sand, dust without end

Desolation, I have come home

***

Hikers on the Sprengisandur are definitely hardcore.

***

Steph commented that Iceland makes me surprisingly poetic. I said it was the Claritin. Truth is I tend to ignore the poetic thoughts as too cliche and trite, letting only the odd one slip through. Maybe I should stop holding back and see where it takes me? [I’m not 13 anymore, I know every word I put down isn’t gold. :)]

***

That was epic. Walking on a highland road in high winds. So much sand eaten. 16 m/s. Market Street in Philly in high winds is a walk in the park. Top speeds here are around 60 m/s.

***

Picture stops are now also potential pit stops. Yeah, not me, yet.

***

650 meters above sea level.

***

Picture stop for the Arctic River Beauty (purple flower).

***

Raining now. Passed another hiker, solo. Almost at mountain hut stop after maybe 3.5 hours. Been napping a bit. Even on the bumpiest roads I still conk out.

***

The mountain hut is the sparse bunk accommodations I always fear I’ll get. Those aside, it’s a welcome respite from the roads. And were I backpacking, it’d be a good place to stay. But, whoa, that wind. Not sure if the wind plus rain is better or worse than the wind plus sand. Maybe differently unpleasant. This is indeed the wilderness. I’ve seen paradise and am getting a tiny taste of how hellish it can be. Look up bracing in the dictionary, and I’m sure you’ll find “a windy day in the Icelandic Highlands.”

***

Just passed a man on a bicycle…wearing shorts. That’s a certain kind of something there.

***

Crossed Fjordungsvatn [“1/4 Lake” located a quarter of the way from the north to the south on the route] barely held back at the end by rocks to form a small, muddy stream for crossing. Rather large/long.

***

Between mud on the window and the fog itself, I can’t get a good shot of the fog-shrouded Highlands. Or when it was just coming down. Now we’re just about out. stopping at Aldeyjarfoss for the falls and bathrooms.

***

Might’ve gotten less wet peeing by the side of the road. I only went about halfway down to the falls. There was a tricky bit I didn’t want to try in this rain. Also, the light color pants were a poor choice for a super rainy day. I think I got a couple good photos of the falls and the fog.

***

Really hope the hotel is next. Hot shower and hotter tea, please.

***

One of the Dutch couples hat a bottle of Jack; the husband snapping a photo of the rain-soaked person returning and taking a swig. Probably good I turned back early and have a head cold. 🙂

***

There. Showered and two small loads of laundry done before dinner. This sink, while it lacks the built in stopper does have a sink plug. It also is a bit small. Still, gets the job done. I think a few of the dirty items are going to be relegated to the not worth the effort to wash pile and go to the bottom of my suitcase. [ETA: I washed all the clothes, wringing until my arms felt like they’d come off. But all the clothes are washed and drying, if not already mostly dry. Yay!]

The room here at Narfastadir is nice. There’s wifi and a sink plug and a heater in the bathroom for additional clothes drying. Might do a load or two in the morning to maximize heater use, since we’re here two nights. [Nope, did ALL the clothes tonight because that’s how I roll.] A load is underwear and a shirt or two, or two pairs of pants, or some other couple to half dozen items at a time. Slow going. Time to head to dinner.

***

Dinner (buffet) was really, really good. Had two helpings of the chicken, roasted potatoes and carrots, and apple cake with real whipped cream. Plus beer and coffee.

***

Internet is being futzy on the laptop (phone is generally fine), so I guess I’ll hold off on posting/uploading until morning. Or not. Since now it connected. Laundry first.
