Epic Iceland 2015, Day 15 – Wednesday, August 5th

Day 15 pics here. Somehow despite the weather and my mood I managed to take nearly 300 photos. IDEK.

Remember all those gorgeous, sunny days I was “complaining” about? They finally ran out. Upper 40s not 50s, cloudy, and rainy. I think after two weeks of near perfect weather it’s allowed.

Asbyrgi’s on the docket for today. Excited to revisit (it was pretty much my favorite place last time) and a bit worried (it was pretty much my favorite place last time).

***

First stop: Husavik. Supermarket for lunch stuff (grabbed skyr and replenished my candy bar stash). Took a bit of a wander around the town (before 10 am nothing’s really open). Then hopped on the bus down by the harbor. I’m sure the rain/wind/cold is exactly what my head thing needs. Asbyrgi is next. After that I think I might see if I can stay on the bus, pick and choose when I get wet and cold. We’ll see.

***

Foggy. I think fog might just be perfect for Asbyrgi.

***

No fog. Only a few drops of rain. Very green this time around.  but I leave feeling aggravated not refreshed. Felt rushed. Too much chatter. I think there’s nothing for it but to come here on my own. And my camera malfunctioned a bit. Seems to be fine now, sort of froze. Sorry, Asbyrgi. I’ll be back, though. Hope my pics turn out since I took them all so quickly so as not to fall behind. Letting it go.

Okay, the mixed berry skyr was a good choice. Berry bits and a touch sweeter than expected. I think if I had granola for the pear skyr, that would be perfect. Regardless, protein. That should help my mood.

***

Dettifoss. Much better without the death march through the ice and snow. Clear paths meant I could quickly hike there and back after a few pics, then be all dry and warmish. A few of the others are back. I have no issues rushing through site when I’m cold and wind blown. Now I’m doing some knitting.

***

Vidi Crater gorgeous but so windy. So cold. Everyone was super quick getting back.

***

Free hot beverages at the Krafla Power Station. Need to read up some more on it. I think we did the crater on the last trip but only drove by the plant.

This is also the first time I’ve noticed the sulfur smell here [in Iceland in general; near Krafla, it’s a guarantee]. Last time I could detect it in the hotel hot water or maybe I’m just acclimatized? I have been here two weeks, after all.

***

Hverir mud flats/geothermal mud area. Forgot I loved this area so much [beyond Asbyrgi]. Like being on Mars, if Mars were muddy not dusty and dry.

***

Picture stop overlooking Lake Myvatn and area. Myvatn and pseudo craters next. Long days are long. Cold and wet again. Mustn’t grumble. Will be warm again. Someday.

***

Next time I think I’m focusing on the north. Forgot how much I loved the Lake Myvatn area [will make sure to avoid bitey midge season at the end of June].

***

Passed on the hike through the pseudo craters. They’re cool, but I’m cold and saw them last time. Checked out the souvenir shop, almost bought a stuffed sheep. Just want to be warm again.

***

Took a hot shower despite not taking the last hike in the cold and the rain. Didn’t warm up until halfway through dinner. Food was a bit disappointing tonight, but the white wine I had mitigated that.

Currently doing one last load of wash (wet, muddy day), so I’m still caught up. Then sleep.
