Epic Iceland 2015, Day 2 – Thursday, July 23rd

Pictures! The pseudo live blog continues.

Slept alright, all things considered–travel, strange place/bed, etc. Woke up stuffy, but that’s mostly disappeared after a shower and being vertical.

In places with tour groups, later breakfasts (9 am-ish) are always a bit dicey. But I found a table for myself after first sitting in one reserved by a German woman. Black sweater on a dark chair doesn’t exactly stand out. Even to her since she would have forgotten it when she left if her husband didn’t grab it.

My current hotel (Natura) is a bit removed from the city center, so wandering aimlessly might not be the thing for today. Then again, after doing four-mile morning walks, what’s a couple here or there?

First I need to post yesterday’s write-up online [which I did, go me!]. Then I can figure out what to do. It’s a gorgeous sunny day; I can’t spend it inside. Although, since day lasts until midnight here…

Was going to give the hotel spa a try, but there was nothing available. My bank account is grateful, even if my body was looking forward to it. Which means Plan B–get out into the beautiful day and go wandering.

Walk into city proper not too bad [a mile and some change]–still out of shape. Circled up by Hallgrimskirkja Church [taking way too many photos of it–you did that last time, honey] and Cafe Loki. Wandered a bit [gah!] further and stopped at Kol Restaurant for lunch. Set lunch menu, three courses for 3.490 ISK [no, the food isn’t cheap here, but you suck it up and sometimes get some amazing meals; made even better when you’re starving]: Scallops on a green pea risotto, filet [of some kind of fish with broccoli, pumpkin seeds, broccoli], and white chocolate cheesecake. Sitting next to two young French women. Friendly. Another French family of four. Euro must be doing well? Lots of French and Germans around. [Or maybe it’s just the time of year? Also, I remember way more French than German.]

Note to self: if the menu says filet and isn’t followed by mignon–it’s going to be fish. Not bad, but considering I never eat fish, that plus scallops (which aren’t shallots or scallions, dumbass), my food adventure limit has been hit. [Clearly my brain just wasn’t online yet. I’m not usually that flaky.] White chocolate cheesecake with a lemon sauce, meringue, and ice cream. Now to pay and explore some more.

Survived the walk back–didn’t get lost! Also took off my fleece. I’m going to laugh if I get a tan in Iceland of all places. I’ve gotten some exercise and sun. I think I can laze around the rest of the day with a free conscience.

Listened to a podcast and died for a few hours. Reviewed upcoming itinerary and shuffled things around/packed for tomorrow. The rest of tonight I’m [continuing] hanging back–knitting, fic, reading, etc.
